The Genome Integrity and Structural Biology Laboratory of NIEHS is looking for a Staff Scientist for the Mutagenesis and DNA Regulation Group under the group leader, Dr. Paul Doetsch. The research focus of this group is on the mechanisms of mutagenesis and regulation of DNA repair and their relationship to human cancers as well as the development of antibiotic resistance in pathogenic microorganisms. Studies are directed at replicative and transcriptional mutagenesis in prokaryotic and eukaryotic systems to delineate mechanisms leading to changes in cellular phenotype (including antibiotic resistance) from oxidative stress and other genotoxic insults. Studies on the DNA base excision repair (BER) pathway in mammalian systems are aimed at understanding how dysregulation of BER and its interactions with other DNA repair pathways contributes to tumor development.

A Staff Scientist is an NIH employee generally appointed to a time-limited, renewable position. Staff Scientists do not receive independent resources, although they often work independently and have sophisticated skills and knowledge essential to the work of the laboratory. Staff Scientists should be capable of independently designing experiments, but do not have responsibilities for initiating new research programs. The Staff Scientist in this position serves as a laboratory leader under the guidance of Dr. Paul Doetsch, Principal Investigator, to conduct independent research, and to mentor postdoctoral fellows and other laboratory staff or trainees.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • A doctoral degree in biological and/or biomedical sciences.
  • Postdoctoral research experience (minimum of 5 years), and an outstanding publication record (with first author papers). Additional relevant research experience beyond postdoctoral experience preferred.
  • A strong background in bacterial and yeast genetics and in molecular biology. Experience in mammalian systems and some experience in biochemistry also preferred but not required.
  • Expertise with model system (yeast, bacteria) assays design and use including systems for characterizing mutations and identification of mutagenesis mechanisms.  This includes experience with assays used for assessing both replicative and transcriptional mutagenesis and assessment of genomic rearrangements.
  • Successful candidate must also have outstanding interpersonal skills, teamwork, and excellent oral and written communication abilities.  In addition, a proven record of success in training other scientists in laboratory techniques relevant to the above areas will also be preferred.

salary/benefits

This is a federal, full-time equivalent position, and a comprehensive benefits package is available. Salary is commensurate with experience.
